To her surprise, she felt no guilt at all about operating behind Jake's back. He was her favorite, but this day she appeared not to hear him. He knew if he lost the herd he was probably done for; he knew it was a long way to water and he might not be able to find it, even though he was riding the good sorrel that Clara had given him.
